2008 Gary W, Spear Sportsmanship Award

WAA congratulates 9/10 player Paul Steve of the Reds on his being named the recipient of the 2008 Gary W. Spear Sportsmanship Award!

2008 Tournament Season Results

Webster tournament teams enjoyed some level of success this tournament season. Of the ten teams at the 12u level, six advanced into the playoff rounds. The two 11/12 local teams are finishing up this weekend. The charge was led by the 11/12 American RTW team who won the District 4 championship and advanced into the semi-final game in the Sectionals before falling to Corning. The 10/11 National RTW team fell in the District championship game. Both 9/10 RTW teams fell in the first round, while both 9/10 local teams advanced one level before exiting.

The four 13+ teams are currently participating in the Jr/Sr county tournaments.

WAA congratulates all tournament players and coaches!

Take a look at the District 4 11/12 championship team! Some of them even smiled!

Important Notice Regarding Residency

Effective immediately, based on a Little League and District 4 ruling, and for as long as WAA remains affiliated with Little League, WAA can accept registrations from those who live within the physical boundary of the town of Webster only. Those who reside in Penfield but have a Webster/14580 mailing address are likely not eligible to play in WAA. Those who fall in this category and played in WAA in 2007 are most likely grandfathered but there are exceptions. The boundary is no longer the Webster Central School District.

WAA has been granted permission to accept players from Wayne county who live North of Route 104.

There are some players who registered for WAA in 2008 who will not be eligible in 2009. Those players are not grandfathered. This was not a decision made by WAA and we continue to work this issue.

May 10 - Organ Donation Awareness Day

On May 10th, WAA hosted Organ Donation Awareness Day. We had a wonderful turnout! A representative from the Finger Lakes Donor Recovery Network (www.donorrecovery.org) was in attendance and spoke about the need for organ donors and described how to become a donor. Andy Yazwinski spoke on the behalf of the Passero family on what organ donation means to them on a much more personal level. WAA honored Noah Passero with a moving rendition of the Star Spangled Banner performed by Schlegel Road Students Stone Meleca, Evan McCabe, Andrew Bellucco, Joey Small, Christian Nairy, and Nick Passero (thank you to Don Russo and Tracy Small!). The flag was lowered to half staff for the day. Noah's and Nick's teams were presented with Donate Life! wristbands from the FLDRN, and Nick and his parents were presented with gifts from Noah's team and the Rochester Red Wings. Noah's Angels #13 jersey was retired, and finally, Dan Passero threw out the first pitch with Nick as his catcher.

WAA collected donations for the heart center at Golisano Children's Hospital, and because of your generosity WAA donated over $1050 dollars!

Thank you to the Webster community for your participation and continued support of the Passero family, and for the dozens of you who registered to become organ donors. Michelle from the FLDRN exhausted her supply of donor information pamphlets and was very enthused at the interest from our community.

We hope to post pictures from the event soon.

May 3 - Opening Day at Empire Park!

Saturday, May 3 is Opening Day at Empire Park! This year during our annual ceremony will be honoring those who supported the WAA Save Face program which allowed WAA to purchase batting helmet face masks for our young players.

Those supporters are Stephanie Annunziata, a VP at Hevron & Hevron, CPAs, Dr. Dan Squilla, a local dentist, and Dr. Vito Quatela of the Quatela Center for Plastic Surgery. WAA thanks them for their generosity!

Ceremonies start at 11:30 at Empire Park, field 1.

See photos from opening day here!

WAA Promotes Good Sportsmanship

Starting this year, in our Minor (9/10) league, players will be eligible for the WAA Good Sport award after each game. Teams will choose the recipient, a player from the opposing team, and present a bag tag that the winner can proudly display.

AED Update

WAA raised enough funds in 2007 to purchase an AED for use at Empire Park. The AED was dedicated to our late past-president John Frank who passed away in 2006.

Our ultimate goal was to purchase 2 AEDs and have one available at D'Amico Park. Through the generosity of the Shaw family, in memory of William Shaw, enough funds were raised to purchase the second AED for D'Amico.

WAA sincerely appreciates the support of all of our family and friends, especially the Frank and Shaw families.

Board Meetings

WAA board meetings are held the second Tuesday of each month except December. Meetings are held at the Webster Parks & Recreation building, 985 Ebner Dr, at 7 PM. During the months of May-August the meetings start at 8:30. The general public is invited to attend.
